Will your old car run on 100% ethanol? Learn the full truth about the central government's new rules!

The central government has approved E100 (100% ethanol) and E85 flex-fuel vehicles. A notification has been issued amending the Motor Vehicles Rules.

The path has been cleared for vehicles running on 100 percent ethanol (E100) and E85 fuel in India. The central government on Monday issued a notification amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, officially allowing flex-fuel vehicles. This change will ease the manufacturing and market launch of vehicles specifically designed to run on high-density ethanol-blended fuel.

Vehicles will run on E100 and E85 fuel

The government has amended the Motor Vehicles Act to include E85 and E100 fuels in emission-related provisions. E85 contains up to 85 percent ethanol, and E100 contains 100 percent ethanol. Flex-fuel vehicles running on these fuels are designed with special technology.

Some car manufacturers are also preparing to launch E100 fuel-powered models soon. Therefore, the change in regulations is seen as an important step towards promoting this technology.

E100 will not be able to be put in cars with normal petrol

Despite the rule change, not all vehicles will be able to use E85 or E100 fuel. According to officials, these fuels can only be used in vehicles specifically designed and certified for them.

Vehicles designed to use E20 or regular gasoline cannot run on E85 or E100 fuel. Therefore, existing vehicle owners do not need to make any modifications to their vehicles or switch to E85 fuel.

What is flex-fuel technology?

Flex-fuel technology is used in vehicles designed to run on a mixture of gasoline and ethanol in varying proportions. Depending on the vehicle's design and certification, these vehicles can use fuels such as E85 or E100.

This technology is widely used in countries like Brazil and the United States. Revisions to regulations in India are also expected to boost the development and sales of vehicles based on this technology.

Ethanol can reduce pollution

According to officials, ethanol has a lower fossil carbon footprint than regular gasoline. Using fuel with a higher ethanol blend can help reduce vehicle emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and some hydrocarbons.

However, the actual reduction in emissions will depend on the vehicle technology, engine and fuel used.

Helps reduce dependence on crude oil imports

A key objective of promoting ethanol-based fuels is to reduce India's dependence on crude oil imports. Increased use of ethanol in gasoline could help reduce demand for conventional petroleum fuels.

After the approval of E100 and E85 vehicles, now aspects like the arrival of vehicles based on this technology in the market and the availability of fuel for them will also be monitored.
