Explained: Why India’s first indigenous expendable turbojet engine is a historic breakthrough

Image
India has achieved something that only a handful of countries in the world can claim, by developing its first indigenous expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg thrust class. The engine could support future cruise missiles, loitering munitions and high-speed unmanned systems, reducing dependence on overseas suppliers. For the first time, India has successfully developed an indigenous expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg thrust class. Designed by DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and manufactured by Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering, the engine was delivered to GTRE on July 22, 2026. It is a major technological milestone that could strengthen India’s future missile and drone programmes. DRDO’s new 350 kg thrust engine marks a big leap for Indian defence  So, what exactly is an expendable turbojet engine? Think of a jet engine as a machine that breathes air. It pulls air in from the front, compresses it, mixes it with fuel, burns the mixture, and throws the hot gas...

First Successful Flight-Test Of DRDO's Indigenous Power Take Off Shaft On LCA Tejas In Bengaluru

Image
Pradeep Kumar –  The first successful flight-test of the Power Take Off (PTO) shaft on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Tejas) Limited Series Production (LSP)-3 aircraft was carried out in Bengaluru today. The power take off shaft has been indigenously designed and developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)'s Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), Chennai.   The PTO shaft, which is a critical component in the aircraft, will support the requirements of future fighter aircraft and their variants and offer competitive cost and short lead times in availability. With this successful test, DRDO has achieved a significant technological achievement by realizing the complex high-speed rotor technology that only a few countries have.   The PTO shaft was designed with the unique innovative patented 'Frequency Spanning Technology' which enables it to overcome the impedance at various operating engine speeds. The...

India Successfully Test-fires Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile

The DRDO-developed quick reaction surface-to-air-missile was test launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur. India Tuesday successfully flight tested the indigenously developed new Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile from Odisha coast here, Defence Reserach and Development Organisation (DRDO) said. The DRDO-developed quick reaction surface-to-air-missile was test launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near here at about 3.08 pm, an official of the organisation said. To monitor the missile's trajectories number of tracking instruments were used. The missile has an operational range of 50 to km distance and features mid course inertial guidance through fiber optic gyroscope and active radar homing in terminal phase, he said. The DRDO in its official twitter post said, "Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile for @IndianNavy was flight tested from ITR Chandipur. The missile was tested against an electronic target at a low altitud...
