Rohingya & Bangladeshi Settlements Removed From Jammu: What Triggered The Action
Official figures show 7,656 Rohingyas and 504 Bangladeshi nationals have been identified across Jammu and Kashmir, with 6,737 Rohingyas recorded in the Jammu division.
Temporary shelters, huts and makeshift shops used by Rohingya families at several locations in Jammu have been removed after notices were issued to landowners whose private properties were reportedly being used for residential and commercial purposes.
The action followed the visit of the Centre’s High-Level Committee on Demographic Change to Jammu. Families at the identified locations reportedly cleared their belongings and vacated the sites, with visuals showing temporary structures being dismantled.
How Did Rohingyas And Bangladeshis Reach Jammu?
There is no official indication that the government settled Rohingya or Bangladeshi nationals in Jammu. Reports suggest that many reached the region through family and local networks, while some cases involve allegations of unauthorised entry into India.
In areas such as Narwal, Bhatindi and Sunjwan, some families reportedly rented private land from local owners and established temporary shelters.
The issue has since drawn administrative attention to the use of private land, documentation, verification of foreign nationals and the expansion of temporary settlements.
No Direct Bulldozer Demolition
The action at these locations did not involve direct demolition by bulldozers.
Instead, notices were issued to the respective landowners, following which the temporary structures were removed and the sites vacated.
Where Have Rohingya Settlements Been Reported?
Rohingya families have previously been reported in several parts of Jammu city and its outskirts, including Narwal, Bhatindi, Sunjwan and Bahu Fort.
Their presence has also been reported in Ladakhi Colony, Upper Thather, Poonch Colony, Guda Brahmana and Chinore.
What Do Official Figures Show?
Figures submitted by the Jammu and Kashmir government to the High-Level Committee indicate that 7,656 Rohingyas and 504 Bangladeshi nationals have been identified across 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Of these, 6,737 Rohingyas and 46 Bangladeshi nationals were identified across the 10 districts of the Jammu division, while the Kashmir division accounted for 919 Rohingyas and 458 Bangladeshi nationals.
The figures were shared with the committee during its visit to Jammu on 10 August.
