During the 1999 Kargil War, Nana Patekar even accompanied the army to the border. For this, he had to obtain special permission from the then Defense Minister, George Fernandes.


Nana Patekar served as a Major with the Maratha Light Infantry for approximately 60 days. During this time, he frequently accompanied soldiers on border patrols. He spent time with them in combat zones, encouraging them and spending time with them.


Took army training for 3 years

Nana Patekar has a long history with the military. He joined the Territorial Army in 1988 and was made an honorary captain. He underwent military training with the Maratha Light Infantry and also participated in commando training.


Nana Patekar revealed in an interview that VK Singh was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time. Later, VK Singh also played a small role in the 1991 film "Prahaar."


In the Kargil war, the officers had refused

When the Kargil War broke out in 1999, Nana Patekar expressed his desire to serve on the front lines. However, army officials were concerned about sending an actor directly to the front lines in the middle of a war. Therefore, his request was initially refused.


Nana Patekar then contacted the then Defense Minister, George Fernandes. He explained that he had been a national-level rifle shooter and had also received army training with the Maratha Light Infantry. He requested permission to visit the border.

After receiving permission from George Fernandes, Nana Patekar accompanied the army to the border. He was part of the Maratha Light Infantry's Quick Reaction Team. During this period, he was deployed in the Dras, Sopore, Baramulla, and Leh sectors.


Nana Patekar also accompanied soldiers on border patrols several times. He visited hospitals to meet injured soldiers and boost their morale. During his nearly 60-day stay with the army, he was also part of the planning and execution of some operations.


When asked about this experience in an interview some time ago, he refused to divulge any confidential details related to the operation. Citing security concerns, he said he couldn't share such details. Nana Patekar also revealed that he had lost approximately 20 kilograms during that time.


Nana Patekar served in the Territorial Army for nearly 25 years. He retired from the army in 2013.
