After Sahil's suicide, rules may change at IIT Bombay. Know what will happen if you get caught cheating?

Education expert Maheshwar Peri says that college students are also our children. If a child makes a mistake at home, do we treat them so harshly that they take their own lives?

In response to the academic pressures and suicides, IIT Bombay may change several rules. As part of this, the institute is drafting a new SOP to take action against students accused of exam malpractice. The new draft emphasizes giving students the opportunity to lodge objections and seek guidance. This week, a meeting of IIT Bombay's management team is expected to take a decision on this draft. These changes are coming after the suicide of former B.Tech student Sahil Wakode.

The new SOP may include a provision to allow students caught cheating to speak to the teaching assistant before any action is taken. The penalties for unfair means in exams have also been reviewed.

What changes are possible, what are the benefits?

  1. If a student is caught cheating in the exam, he will be given a chance to talk to a mentor before any action is taken against him.
  2. During the examination, the invigilator on duty will be given clear instructions on what can and cannot be done in the event of a suspected incident in the examination hall and what needs to be recorded at the time of the incident.
  3. All the rules related to the examination should be written correctly in the answer sheet.
  4. Students will receive greater representation. Equal participation is being provided on committees handling disciplinary matters and formulating SOPs.
IIT Bombay has seen three suicides this year, the ninth in the country.

This is the third suicide at IIT Bombay this year and the ninth in the country. In the past six years, 16 IIT students have committed suicide, the highest in 2025. According to the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, a total of 160 IIT students have committed suicide in the past 20 years.
