Assam Rifles Jawan Killed, 4 Injured In Suspected Militant Attack Near Myanmar Border

Preliminary reports suggested the involvement of militants affiliated with the NSCN (K-YA), although there was no official confirmation about the identity of the attackers.


An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured after a patrol team came under suspected militant attack along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday, officials said.


The incident took place around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah under Nampong circle, where personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were conducting patrols in an area witnessing border fencing work, according to preliminary information.


Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42, was killed in the firing, while four other personnel sustained injuries and were being evacuated for medical treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

Security forces have stepped up operations in the area following the attack.


Preliminary reports suggested the involvement of militants affiliated with the NSCN (K-YA), although there was no official confirmation about the identity of the attackers. An official statement from the Assam Rifles is awaited.


Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said the police had received information about the incident and were gathering further details.


“We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it," the SP said.


The Changlang stretch of the India-Myanmar border is considered sensitive due to the presence and movement of insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.
