Tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian forces firing on commercial vessels; the US shooting down missiles and drones.

 


Amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated. According to reports, forces from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have fired on commercial vessels transiting the crucial international waterway over the past hour. CNN, citing the US military, confirmed this.

According to the US military, American aircraft successfully intercepted and destroyed an Iranian cruise missile and a single-barrel attack drone mid-air. The incident comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz.

America launches new wave of attacks

The US Central Command issued a statement saying it had launched a new wave of strikes against Iran. The US said these strikes were aimed at weakening Iran's military ability to target civilian and commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran's state television reported several explosions near Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Qeshm and Jask in southern Iran.

Oman summons Iranian ambassador

Following reports of the drone strikes, Oman summoned the Iranian ambassador and lodged a formal protest, hours after talks with Iran's foreign minister in Muscat on navigation and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that the main issue of the Muscat talks was the navigation arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran claimed that no agreement could be reached due to US pressure on Oman.

Iran accuses America

Iran has condemned the US attacks on its territory, saying they have harmed diplomatic efforts. Iran has accused the US of creating insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, affecting international shipping and interfering in the waterway's management.
