One truck, number plate 7… A 'chameleon truck' was caught in Ghazipur, changing its identity depending on the area.

During a check in Ghazipur, the ARTO busted a major racket of fake number plates. Fake number plates from seven districts in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand were recovered from a suspicious truck. Mining mafias used these to evade toll and police checks. The ARTO seized the truck and launched an investigation to determine the source and network of the fake number plates.

During a check in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, the ARTO uncovered a gang involved in fraud and fake number plates. According to the ARTO, while on patrol, he spotted a truck and, suspecting it, stopped it. Several fake number plates from various districts were found inside the truck. The ARTO immediately seized the truck and handed it over to the police. However, before any action could be taken, the truck driver fled and locked the vehicle.

The incident took place on Sunday when ARTO Dhanveer Yadav and mining officials went on a vehicle checking drive as part of a road safety campaign. After checking vehicles all night, they were returning in the morning when ARTO Dhanveer Yadav stopped a truck near Maharajganj. The truck driver fled after stopping the truck, and when the ARTO tried to open the gate, he locked the gate using GPS. After much effort, the ARTO somehow opened the gate and upon reaching inside, he saw that the truck had different number plates from seven districts of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. One of these number plates was genuine, while the remaining six were fake.

Several fake number plates recovered

Upon closer inspection, they discovered the truck was from Sonbhadra district. It bore license plates from Mirzapur-Ghazipur, Hazaribagh, and Garhwa districts of Jharkhand. Furthermore, to avoid electronic surveillance and highway cameras, the driver had wired the number plate to a position where it could be quickly replaced or removed if detected. If the ARTO is to be believed, mining mafias use license plates representing the districts they enter to drive their vehicles. This allows them to mislead toll plaza police and surveillance cameras, thus saving royalty money.

Hi-tech fraud caught during checking

ARTO Dhanveer Yadav stated that the matter isn't limited to the number plates; the chassis number and other technical details are also being verified. It's also being investigated where the fake number plates were being manufactured on such a large scale and who all are involved in this network. He added that the truck has been handed over to the Kotwali police and a case has been filed against the unidentified driver and owner under various sections.
