Vrindavan: 9 dead, dozens missing after boat carrying Punjab pilgrims capsizes in Yamuna

A tragic boat capsize in the Yamuna River near Vrindavan’s Keshi Ghat has left 9 dead and dozens missing. The boat, reportedly carrying 32 pilgrims from Punjab's Muktsar, struck a submerged pontoon bridge. Search and rescue operations by NDRF and local divers are ongoing.

A festive atmosphere turned into a scene of chaos and panic on Friday evening as a boat carrying several passengers capsized in the Yamuna River near the iconic Keshighat in Vrindavan. Local authorities have launched an immediate search and rescue operation, with several individuals currently reported missing.

Family members of those missing were seen gathering at Keshi Ghat, praying for their loved ones and mourning over their loss, while others were simply angry at there being no accountability for such tragedy.

"We are praying that we will find our loved ones," said one woman whose husband is one of the missing. "But if we do not get any response from the authorities, we will take action against them."

According to eyewitnesses, one woman who survived the accident was in a critical condition and was taken to Kashi Hospital in Mathura. Several others who had been rescued suffered serious injuries.

One after another, those who witnessed the incident—including local residents, police officers, and tourists—are describing how quickly the boat capsized when it hit the submerged bridge.

"The boat hit the pillar of the pontoon bridge, and it went down very fast," said a man from Mathura. "It was just a matter of seconds before it was submerged."

There are also reports of other boats (that were not involved in this incident) capsizing earlier in the day, which would have left debris scattered on the river's surface.

"This whole situation is a tragedy," said Pandey. "Our main concern right now is finding the missing persons and recovering bodies."

Mathura DIG said he felt for the family members who have lost loved ones but expressed concern that there are no boats available to retrieve the remaining bodies.

"I wish we could help everyone who is missing, but the river is large. We're doing everything we can."
