Will KYC be required to use Facebook and Instagram? Parliamentary committee recommends

KYC may soon be mandatory for using social media platforms in India. This will only happen if the central government accepts the recommendations of a parliamentary committee. The parliamentary committee made this recommendation to ensure the safety of women and minors. It should be noted that the need to remove minors from social media platforms has been a long-standing issue in the country. The parliamentary committee made this recommendation to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. 

Recommendation for age and identity verification 

A parliamentary committee has proposed implementing a system for verifying user identity and age based on KYC on social media, dating apps, and gaming platforms. This recommendation is part of a report on "Cybercrime and Cybersecurity for Women." The parliamentary committee submitted this report regarding women's empowerment. 

The committee's strict recommendations 

The committee emphasized in its report that KYC should be mandatory on all social media platforms to eliminate problems like fake profiles and malicious harassment. The committee recommended that companies periodically re-verify users and monitor accounts that repeatedly generate complaints.

Rules should also be made for dating and gaming apps

A parliamentary committee has called for stricter licensing rules and age-verification protocols for dating and gaming apps to protect women and minors from fraud and exploitation. It proposes imposing heavy fines on platforms that violate these rules. In its report, the panel highlights how fake accounts are contributing to cyberstalking, online harassment, and the unauthorized sharing of private photos.
