Punjab Youth Congress leader arrested for demanding ransom of lakhs of rupees

 


Amritsar-  Taking a major action in a serious and sensitive case of extortion, Amritsar Rural Police has arrested Azad Singh, a leader of Punjab Youth Congress from Baba Bakala constituency. The arrest came after the police received a complaint from a local resident about death threats and a ransom demand of Rs 30 lakh. The arrested accused has been identified as Azad Singh, a resident of village Butari, police station Khalchaya. According to the police, this case is related to Baba Bakala and Jandiala Guru area. On January 14, Deepak Julka, a resident of Jandiala Guru, started receiving continuous calls and messages from foreign mobile numbers. The callers identified themselves as Keshav Shivala, Satta Nashera and Karan Bath and demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh.

The complainant was threatened that if the demanded amount was not paid, he and his family would be killed. Seeing the serious threat, the victim immediately contacted the Amritsar Rural Police. As soon as the complaint was received, the police registered a case and immediately started an investigation and reached the accused on the basis of technical evidence. During the investigation, the police arrested Azad Singh and a mobile phone was also recovered from his possession. The preliminary investigation also revealed that the accused was in contact with some gangsters sitting abroad, through whom ransom calls and threats were being made. According to police records, a case has already been registered against Azad Singh, which further strengthens the suspicion of his criminal background.

Talking to the media in this regard, Suhail Mir, SSP Amritsar Rural said that the police took action without delay as soon as the complaint was received. He said that the accused had demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain his links with foreign elements. The SSP also clarified that the investigation into the case is ongoing and arrests of more people associated with this network are also possible in the coming time.
