A woman from Arunachal Pradesh has alleged that Chinese authorities refused to recognize her Indian passport as valid and detained her during a transit halt at Shanghai airport. In several posts on X, Pema Wang Thongdok said that immigration officials at Shanghai Pudong airport detained her for 18 hours on November 21, claiming that her Indian passport was "invalid" because her birthplace, Arunachal Pradesh, is part of China, not India. According to reports, Thongdok was traveling from London to Japan on November 21 when she landed in Shanghai for a three-hour layover.


What did the Chinese spokesperson say?

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, "According to what we have learned, throughout the visit, China's border inspection authorities conducted inspection procedures in accordance with laws and regulations. Law enforcement agencies were free from discrimination and unfair practices. The woman's legal rights and interests were fully protected, no necessary measures were taken against her, and there was no so-called "detention" or "harassment."
