Punjab University Senate Election: Vice President cum PU Chancellor has approved the holding of Panjab University Senate elections. Let us tell you that the schedule for holding elections on November 9 was sent to the Chancellor for approval by the PU administration, which has been approved today.


Punjab University Senate Election: The ongoing struggle of the Punjab University Bachao Morcha regarding the Senate and Syndicate elections of Panjab University Chandigarh has got a big victory. The Vice President cum PU Chancellor has approved the holding of the Senate elections of Panjab University. Let us tell you that the schedule of holding the elections on November 9 was sent to the Chancellor for approval by the PU administration, which has been approved today.


In the approval notification issued, Sarita Chauhan, Secretary, Vice President's Office, said that the elections will be held as per the schedule in the letter submitted earlier by the university.


Let us tell you that the term of the Panjab University Senate is five years and the previous Senate ended on October 31, 2024. The central government dissolved the old Senate even before the election of the new Senate, due to which the elections were stalled.

Students had announced a gherao of BJP.

The PU Chandigarh Bachao Morcha had been protesting in the university for the past 25 days demanding the announcement of the dates for the Senate elections. During this time, several organizations staged protests and called for a university bandh on November 26.


The protesters had warned that if the election date was not announced, they would surround all the BJP offices in Punjab on December 3, but even before the siege, the Vice President approved the elections.

Total seats for Senate elections 

  • 15 seats in the registered graduate category
  • 2 seats for professors of teaching departments of the university
  • 2 seats for Associate Professors and Assistant Professors
  • 3 seats for Principals of Technical and Professional Colleges and 3 seats for Teachers/Staff of the same colleges
  • 8 seats for Principals of Affiliated Arts Colleges
  • 8 seats for Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors of Affiliated Arts Colleges
  • 6 seats for different faculties of the university, one joint faculty seat will be selected by the remaining faculties

Proposed dates of elections:

  • Elections for Principals and Staff of Technical and Professional Colleges on 7th September 2026 and counting on 9th September 2026
  • Elections for Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors of University Teaching Departments on 14 September 2026 and counting on 16 September 2026
  • Elections for Principals and Teachers of Recognized Arts Colleges on September 20, 2026 and counting on September 22, 2026
  • Elections for registered graduates on 20 September 2026 and counting on 22 September 2026
  • The elections for various faculties of the university will be held on October 4, 2026 and the counting will also be held on the same day.
