Ladakh infuriated by 'anti-national' rhetoric and the deaths of four youths; Leh apex body boycotts talks with the Centre

The Leh Apex Body has announced to boycott the talks scheduled with the Union Home Ministry on October 6 on the issues of making Ladakh a full state and including it in the Sixth Schedule.

Following recent violent protests demanding full statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) has decided to boycott talks with the central government. The organization has demanded a judicial inquiry into the deaths of four youths in security force firing during the September 24 protests. Around 90 others were injured during the violent protests. LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay said, "The CRPF opened fire without warning, which is illegal. We want a judicial inquiry into why live bullets were used."

The Leh Apex Body has accused the central government of labeling the protesters "anti-national" and "puppets of Pakistan" and demanded an apology from the people of Ladakh. The next round of talks between the central government and Ladakh representatives, including members of the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), was scheduled for October 6. The LAB, along with the KDA, is leading the movement for full statehood for Ladakh and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.

Both the LAB and the KDA have accused the current Ladakh administration of mishandling the protests in Leh on September 24. KDA leader Sajjad Kargili on Monday demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the incident, saying, "There should be some accountability for the way the firing took place and the injuries to many people... This is a prime example of why we need democracy." Anger in the region has been further fueled by the detention of climate activist and statehood campaigner Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). He has been sent to Jodhpur jail.

Sonam Wangchuk's supporters say his arrest has given the Ladakh conflict nationwide clout. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta hinted at a "foreign hand" behind the violence, but the LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) categorically rejected this. LAB co-chairman Chering said, "If there was a foreign conspiracy, what were the agencies doing? This is a conspiracy to suppress our movement." The Congress party has also demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, while the BJP has accused the Congress party of inciting the violence.
