Kolkata Gangrape Accused Monojit Mishra Met ‘Someone’ Before Arrest: New Details Emerge
The police suspect that the law student was gangraped since she turned down the marriage proposal of the main accused.
Kolkata Gangrape Case: Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the Kolkata gangrape case, had allegedly met some people hours before his arrest and the police are still trying to identify them, reported PTI, citing an official aware of the matter. A 24-year-old first-year student of the South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the institution by an alumnus and two senior students. Mishra, Zaid Ahmed and Promit Mukherjee have been arrested in the case.
The police are trying to identify the people Monojit Mishra met before being arrested by the Kolkata police. The investigators were also checking if the other two accused - Zaid Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee - also contacted any person before they were picked up by the police. The official told the news agency that the movement of the three accused is very important for the sake of the investigation.
"Their mobile phone location showed them moving around Ballygunge Station Road and Fern Place on the evening of June 26. The mobile tower dump is being used for the purpose," the officer told PTI.
"We are analysing the call detail records; we need to know the purpose of these meetings, which could have links to the case," he said.
Three Accused Giving Contradictory Statements: Cops
According to the investigators, the trio were giving contradictory statements to mislead the police. "Because these three are law students, they know certain tricks. They are giving out contradictory statements to confuse us," the official told the news agency.
The police questioned the Vice-Principal of the college, Dr Nayna Chatterji, twice about her conversation with Mishra, who had called her on the morning of June 26. On Wednesday, the investigators also talked to some of the 16 people who were present at the college on June 25 when the crime happened, he said.
New Evidence in Kolkata Gangrape Case?
The Detective Department (DD) of the Kolkata Police on Wednesday took over the investigation of the crime. A stain was found on a bed sheet seized from the guard's room and the police are trying to find out if that had any connection with the rape.
"So far, the SIT had been probing into the matter. Now, the DD section will be investigating. Necessary documents have been handed over. They have added charges like kidnapping and causing harm with dangerous weapons," he said.
According to the police, the woman was tortured for over three hours inside a guard's room next to the student's union office on Wednesday. The miscreants shut the main door of the college and made the security guard sit outside his room, the victim alleged. The police suspect that the law student was gangraped since she turned down the marriage proposal of the main accused, "making him angry."
