Ankita Bhandari Murder Case: In the much talked about Ankita Bhandari murder case of Uttarakhand, the Kotdwar district court has convicted the three accused Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta. The court sentenced Pulkit Arya to life imprisonment and fine under various sections of the IPC and his co-accused Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta have also been sentenced to life imprisonment and fine. Ankita's family has been given a compensation of Rs 4 lakh.
Ankita Bhandari has got justice today after a hearing that lasted for two years and eight months. The case was going on since September 2022. The court gave this verdict after hearing both the parties. Ankita worked as a receptionist at Vanatra Resort, the owner of this resort, Pulkit Arya, was accused of her murder. Pulkit Arya is the son of the then BJP leader Vinod Arya. After this matter came to light, BJP expelled him from the party. Let us tell you what happened in this case.
What happened in Ankita Bhandari murder case?
August 2022: 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari was a resident of Yamkeshwar in Pauri district of Uttarakhand. On August 28, Ankita started working as a receptionist at Vanatra Resort located in Yamkeshwar block of Rishikesh.
17–18 September 2022: On September 17, Ankita had a dispute with the resort owner Pulkit Arya. After which she was shifted to a separate room. After which she disappeared under suspicious circumstances on September 18.
19–22 September 2022: After Ankita's disappearance, the family tried to lodge a complaint in several police stations, but the FIR could not be registered. Resort owner Pulkit Arya informed the revenue police about Ankita's disappearance, but no action was taken. Meanwhile, an audio of Ankita also surfaced in which she was heard asking for help.
24 September 2022: Ankita's body was recovered from the Cheela canal near Rishikesh. It was claimed that after the dispute, Pulkit had pushed Ankita into the canal. The police arrested resort owner Pulkit Arya and his two associates Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta in this case.
October 2022: The Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. After which a case was also registered against the accused under the Gangster Act.
December 2022: SIT filed a 500-page chargesheet, which included statements of 97 witnesses. SIT accused Pulkit Arya of murder, molestation and immoral trafficking. The first hearing of the case took place on 30 January 2023. After which the series of arguments started from the side and the opposition. The testimony of the prosecution started from 28 March 2023.
May 2023: Ankita's parents and some social activists alleged that Ankita was raped before she was killed. Protests were also held from time to time by social activists and political parties regarding this matter.
During the trial which lasted for about two years and eight months, the prosecution produced 97 witnesses out of which 47 witnesses were presented in the court. On 19 May 2025, the prosecution lawyer Avnish Negi responded to the arguments of the defence after which the trial ended.
30 May 2025: Kotdwar court convicted Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta for Ankita murder case and sentenced all three to life imprisonment and fine.
