After Murshidabad, Fresh Violence In Another Bengal District During Anti-Waqf Act Protest
Tensions rose in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas as protesters torched vehicles during the anti-Waqf Act protests on Monday.
Bengal Violence: Just
as the situation in Murshidabad started rolling back towards normalcy, tensions
have now gripped yet another West Bengal district — Bhangar in South 24
Parganas — as anti-Waqf Act protesters clashed with the city police and set a
van and other vehicles on fire.
The roads were allegedly blocked by those from the minority
community, officials said.
Videos showed police bikes being set on fire and a police bus turned over with its front glass broken. The videos also showed many police officers present on the streets.

Two
people have so far been arrested in connection with the latest incident while
one police personnel has sustained injuries, officials said.
The violence erupted as supporters of the Indian Secular Front
clashed with the police in the Bhangar area.
ISF supporters were reportedly heading towards Ramlila Maidan in
Kolkata to attend a rally against the Waqf law. The rally was supposed to be
addressed by the party’s MLA, Naushad Siddique.
However,
the police had denied permission to conduct the rally. Despite no green signal
by the police, the rally was held.
A large crowd from the Muslim community gathered in Ghatakpukur to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act passed by the BJP-led Centre. Police personnel were deployed and barricades were also put in place.

The
fresh bout of violence comes days after Murshidabad witnessed violent protests
on the law last week, in which three people were killed while several,
including police officials, were injured. Over 150 people were later arrested
in connection with the violence.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad and other areas of the state where such protests were taking place so that law and order could be maintained.
