India 'strongly' demands return of nationals after Kerala man dies in Russia war

Kerala electrician Binil TB, recruited into Russia's Military Support Service, recently died in Ukraine's war zone. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has 'strongly' demanded early repatriation of remaining Indians deputed at the front line.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday confirmed the death of a Kerala man who was employed by the Russian Military Support Service for war against Ukraine and reiterated its demand for early repatriation for remaining Indian nationals from the country's Army.

"The matter has been strongly taken up with the Russian authorities in Moscow as well as with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi today. We have also reiterated our demand for the early discharge of the remaining Indian nationals," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Binil TB, an electrician from Thrissur, reportedly died in the war zone after being stranded somewhere in Ukrainian territory now under Russian control. Binil's cousin-in-law, Jain TK, who accompanied him to Russia and was assigned to front-line service, was also injured.

Binil (32) and Jain (27) are ITI mechanical diploma holders and had gone to Russia on April 4, hoping to work as electricians and plumbers.

However, upon arrival, their Indian passports were confiscated, and they were subsequently deployed to the war zone as part of the Russian Military Support Service, news agency PTI quoted their relatives as saying.

"We have learnt of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala who had apparently been recruited to serve in the Russian Army. Another Indian national from Kerala, who was similarly recruited, has been injured and is receiving treatment in a hospital in Moscow," Jaiswal said.

The MEA spokesperson conveyed condolences to the family of the man killed in Russia and assured that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is actively assisting the affected families.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Our Embassy in Moscow is in touch with the families, and all possible assistance is being rendered. We are working with the Russian authorities for early transportation of the mortal remains to India. We have also sought the early discharge and repatriation to India of the injured person," Jaiswal added.

More than eight Indian nationals have reportedly died while serving in the Russian Army till now. In August 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed these deaths and disclosed that an additional 63 Indian nationals enlisted in the Russian armed forces are now seeking early discharge.

While the MEA has refrained from providing specific details about the legitimacy and process of their recruitment, it has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and return of its citizens.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow is collaborating closely with local authorities to offer legal, logistical, and consular support to the affected families.
