Woman Assaulted, Paraded Semi-Naked In Horrific Tarn Taran Video, BJP Says 'Punjab No Less Than Bengal'

In a horrific incident from Punjab’s Tarn Taran, a 55-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and paraded semi-naked in Valtoha village by her son’s in-laws after he got married against the wishes of the bride’s parents.

A purported video of the victim being paraded surfaced on social media on Friday. Police said that the incident occurred on March 31, a few days after the victim’s son eloped with a woman and married her against her family’s wishes.

As per the complaint filed by the victim, the woman’s son’s in-laws allegedly assaulted her and tore off her clothes at a time when she was alone at her home when her  The victim further alleged that they paraded her in the village in a semi-naked condition.

Five people have been booked in the case and three of them have been identified as Kulwinder Kaur Mani, Sharanjit Singh Shanni and Gurcharan Singh, police said.

Describing it as a “shocking incident,” National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma said that the NCW has taken suo moto cognizance of the matter.

“Nobody came forward to help her, neither the police nor the locals. This is a shocking incident and NCW has taken a suo moto cognizance of the matter. I am sending a member to enquire into the matter. If the police do not take any step against the perpetrators, NCW will write to the ECI keeping in mind the Model Code of Conduct,” Sharma stated.

BJP’s RP Singh commented on the incident, stating, “Punjab is no different from what’s happening in Bengal. He further said that the incident in Tarn Taran has ashamed all.”

On the basis of the complaint, an FIR was registered on April 3 under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354D (stalking), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 149 (unlawful assembly).

However, no arrests have been made in the case so far.
