'False alarm': Israeli military rules out infiltration from Lebanon
The Israeli military on Wednesday ruled out infiltration from its northern frontier with Lebanon.
As Israeli security forces battle Hamas, it is also facing
conflict on its volatile northern border with Lebanon. The Israeli military has
been engaged in clashes with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for the past
four days. On Wednesday, Israel had said that a “hostile aircraft” crossed its
northern frontier from Lebanon and sounded alert over the infiltration.
However, soon after, the Israel Defense Forces said that the alert issued was
"false".
"The
alert issued nationwide on the Home Front Command app telling residents to
shelter was a false alarm," the Israeli military said. "This is a
mistake, there is no such instruction."
Lebanon's
armed group Hezbollah started exchanging artillery and rocket fire with Israel just
a day after Hamas infiltrated Israel. Hezbollah fired an anti-tank missile on
Wednesday and claimed to have killed and wounded Israeli troops.
Israel
confirmed the attack from Lebanon and launched a retaliatory attack. The
Israeli Army shelled an area in southern Lebanon on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, White House national security spokesperson John
Kirby said that the United States is monitoring the Lebanon-Israel clashes, as
per a report by Reuters.
He confirmed that a rocket fire was seen coming from southern Lebanon into
Israel, adding that it was not in Israel’s interest to have to fight and defend
on a second front.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Beirut said that it has not evacuated and is
open and operating normally. Reports saying otherwise are false, the embassy
said.
