Another terrible train accident in Odisha: six laborers killed after being hit by goods train

At least six laborers were killed and two others were seriously injured after being run over by a goods train at Odisha's Jajpur Keonjhar Road railway station on Wednesday. An officer gave this information.


Bhubaneswar: At least six laborers were killed and two others were seriously injured after being run over by a goods train at Odisha's Jajpur Keonjhar Road railway station on Wednesday. An officer gave this information. The workers had taken shelter under the standing goods train to avoid the heavy rain, when suddenly the goods train started moving without engine and the workers did not get a chance to get out from under it.

A spokesperson of the railway said, “Suddenly there was a storm. The laborers were working on the adjacent railway line where a goods train was standing. They took shelter under it, but unfortunately the goods train which had no engine started moving which caused the accident.” He said that as a result six laborers died and two were injured. The injured have been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

 In a statement, the East Coast Railway said, "Contract workers hired by a contractor for railway work took shelter under a parked box to seek protection from the storm and rain near Jajpur Keonjhar Road (station)." It said that due to the storm, the standing coaches started running without the engine and this accident happened. This incident took place five days after the horrific train accident in Odisha's Balasore district, in which 288 people died. 

On the other hand, five days after suffering a gruesome accident in Odisha's Balasore district, the up train of Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express departed from Shalimar station at 3.25 pm on Wednesday, five minutes late than its scheduled time. As soon as the train reached platform number two of Shalimar station, people started vying to get into its two second class coaches and soon both the coaches were filled to capacity. 

There were many people in the train. One of them, Ranjit Mandal, is going to Bhubaneswar in search of his missing son after the accident on June 2. Mandal, a resident of Sandeshkhali, said that his 18-year-old son Dipankar had boarded the train that crashed along with his friends in search of work in Chennai. He said, “His phone is ringing since the accident, but no one is picking up. I spoke to him just a few minutes before the accident. He has not been found yet and I am going to find him again.
