Bihar: The midnight truth... Why do farmers have to get compensation? The story behind the police lathicharge in Buxar

Land acquisition is being done for SJVN's power plant at Chausa in Buxar district of Bihar. Regarding this, the farmers have been protesting for the compensation for the last two months. On Tuesday night the police barged into the houses of the farmers and lathicharged them. After the video of this incident surfaced, all kinds of questions are arising.

In Bihar's Buxar, farmers staged a massive protest demanding compensation for their land. The farmers are demanding proper compensation for the land acquired for the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam's (SJVN) thermal power plant in Chausa village of Buxar. The police barged into the farmer's house late on Tuesday night and lathi-charged the protesters.

It is alleged that the police brutally lathicharged men and women along with children after entering the house. The family members of the farmers are sharing the video of the lathicharge incident and asking why the police, who kneeled before the criminals, have killed us so brutally.

After the incident of lathi charge by the police after entering the houses on Tuesday night, the farmers got angry and they burnt the vehicles. Chausa power plant was also vandalised.

The farmers opened the front and kept creating ruckus throughout the night. The farmers demonstrated fiercely and set the buses on fire. Police vehicles were also burnt. Farmers have been agitating for the last two months demanding compensation.

Land acquisition was started in 2010-11

In fact, the land acquisition of farmers for the power plant by SJVN in Chausa was done before 2010-11. At that time the farmers were paid compensation as per 2010-11. After this, the company again started the process of acquiring the land of the farmers in 2022.

After this, the farmers are now demanding compensation for the land to be acquired as per the current rates, while the company is forcibly acquiring the land by giving compensation at the old rates. Farmers have been agitating against this for the last 2 months, for which the police barbarically barged into the houses at night and lathi-charged women, men and children.

SJVN company had made big promises to the farmers

Before setting up the thermal power plant in Chausa, the company had assured the farmers of the district that after the company is established in this area, the district would develop at a rapid pace. Along with this, the resources of big schools, hotels and employment will be increased with the CSR fund of the company, there will be prosperity all around.

Apart from this, preference will be given to the local people in the job, but as soon as the farmers signed the agreement, everything changed after that. All the personnel inside the company were reinstated from other states.

What do officers say about lathicharge

SHO Amit Kumar, accused of barging into the farmer's house at 12 o'clock in the night, was asked what the police had gone to the farmer's house at night. On this, he said that the police had gone to arrest the farmers against whom FIR was lodged by SJVN Power Plant in the night, during which they attacked first, after which the police lathi-charged them.

Significantly, the face of the police has been exposed by the CCTV footage, in which it is clearly visible that the police is already standing outside the farmer's house and the door is closed. However, the police did not even have a clue that the farmers of the rural areas would also have installed CCTVs at their places.

Union Minister Ashwini Choubey said – Atrocities with farmers will not be tolerated

MP and Union Minister Ashwini Choubey has termed the Buxar violence as unfortunate. He said that the police action was undemocratic. Union Minister Choubey said that talks have been held with all the top police and administration officials including DM, Commissioner of the district.

Ashwini Choubey said that she has asked the officers to immediately start the process of talks with the farmers and try to reduce the tension. Violence is not the solution to any problem. He said that the way the police took action by entering the houses of the farmers late at night, it was hooliganism.

Union Minister Ashwini Choubey said that I have demanded that strict action should be taken against those guilty policemen, who barged into the houses of the farmers late at night without warrant and used lathis.

He said that Nitish Kumar cannot see all this by becoming Dhritarashtra. The whole government has become Dhritarashtra. Leaving the public on the road, their allies including JDU, RJD and Congress are enjoying the pleasure of power. When the youth are asking for employment, they are being beaten with sticks. If the farmers are demanding their rights, they are being beaten by entering their homes.

Ashwini Choubey said that Nitish Babu is the rule of the jungle. I had a meeting with the company and administration officials on 12 December 2022 and instructed them to explain the issue of land acquisition in a peaceful manner. The district administration was also warned. Atrocities on farmers will not be tolerated. Do not do any violence. Violence does not solve any problem.
