Fine with punishment

Former UP Congress president Raj Babbar has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by an MP MLA court and fined Rs 8,500. He was accused of entering a polling booth in 1996 and assaulting an employee. The sentence is less than three years, so he will not be sent to jail, he will get bail. But Raj Babbar said he would challenge it. Raj Babbar was convicted of obstructing government work and assault. Raj Babbar was the SP candidate.

On May 2, 1996, an FIR was registered by the polling officer at Wazirganj police station. The Lucknow MP MLA Court on Thursday delivered its verdict in the case. However, the court has since granted him bail. According to court documents, the case was reported on May 2, 1996 by polling officer Krishan Singh Rana at Wazirganj police station against SP candidates Raj Babbar and Arvind Yadav besides unidentified persons. It was reported that when the voters stopped coming to booth number 192 of polling station number 192/103. The plaintiff was then coming out of the polling station to eat. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party candidate Raj Babbar along with his associates reached the polling booth and made false allegations of fraudulent voting.
