Hindu shopkeeper beheaded in Udaipur over social media post on Nupur Sharma, 2 held

A Hindu shopkeeper was murdered by two men in Rajasthan's Udaipur on Tuesday. The Udaipur murder was recorded on camera and its video has gone viral on social media. The shopkeeper is believed to have been killed over a social media post supporting BJP leader Nupur Sharma

A shopkeeper was murdered in broad daylight in Udaipur on Tuesday, sparking tensions in the city. The shopkeeper, named Kanhaiya Lal, was murdered by two men who chopped his head off and later recorded a video admitting to killing the man over a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma.

The police arrested the two accused in Bheem area of Rajsamand district on Tuesday night. The accused were caught while they were trying to flee.

India Today TV has learnt that the murder followed a post put up by the shopkeeper's eight-year-old son in support of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nupur Sharma. Nupur Sharma was recently in the news for her controversial statements about Prophet Muhammad.

On Tuesday, a video emerged on social media showing two men entering a tailor's shop in Udaipur and proceeding to attack him with knives. In a separate video posted by the two men, the duo is heard admitting to the murder and threatening PM Narendra Modi.

POLICE PROBE CONTINUES AS CM APPEALS FOR CALM

The Superintendent of Police of Udaipur said, "A heinous murder has been committed and a thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident. Few accused have been identified."

The murder sparked tensions in Udaipur with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot appealing for calm. "I condemn the heinous murder of youth in Udaipur. Strict action will be taken against all the criminals involved in this incident and the police will go to the bottom of the crime. I appeal to all parties to maintain peace," Gehlot said in a tweet.

POTESTS BREAK OUT IN UDAIPUR, INTERNET SUSPENDED

Following the incident, Hindu organisations shut down markets as protests erupted across Udaipur. The demonstrators took to the streets to protest against the violent act.

District Collector Tarachand Meena and Superintendent of Police Manoj Chaudhary reached the spot as the situation escalated.

Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the area for the next 24 hours.

BJP SLAMS CONGRESS RULE IN RAJASTHAN

Rajasthan BJP chief Satish Poonia hit out at the Ashok Gehlot-led government in the state and alleged that the incident was a result of “appeasement policy of the CM and the Congress.”

“What kind of government is this Ashok ji, where Kanhaiya Lal does not have the freedom to support anyone but Mohammad Riyaz has the freedom to kill? Riyaz has also shown violent feelings towards the Prime Minister. Riyaz should be taken into custody immediately and his terrorist links should be investigated,” Satish Poonia tweeted.

He added, “Today's incident in Udaipur proves that Hindu is not safe anywhere under Congress' Ashok Gehlot's rule. It is the result of the appeasement policy of the Chief Minister and the Congress that the criminals are raised in spirit and the fear of law has ended.”

Reacting to the incident, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, “Two Muslim men behead Kanhaiya Lal, a Hindu shopkeeper, inside his shop in Udaipur. They then release a video of the act and another owning up the crime, brandishing machetes used and vow to kill Prime Minister Modi. Ashok Gehlot, however, has promised “thorough” investigation...”

Calling the incident “reprehensible”, BJP leader Bhupender Yadav slammed the Congress government in Rajasthan.

“The brutal murder of an innocent man in Rajasthan’s Udaipur shows that the Ashok Gehlot government is running a jungle raj. This is what happens when a dispensation makes appeasement its governance model. Reprehensible state of affairs,” Bhupender Yadav tweeted.
