New Delhi: Describing the country's startup units as the "Aadhaar-pillar" of New India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the government has decided to observe January 16 as National Startup Day. 

Addressing the startup businessmen of various sectors in a virtual way, the Prime Minister said,'In order to reach this culture of startups to the far-flung areas of the country, it has now been decided to celebrate 16 January as National Startup Day.' Modi said, 'I assure you that all your suggestions, ideas and innovations will get full support from the government.'

He said that startups will become the pillars of New India and the country will move forward with the mantra of 'Innovate for India' and 'Innovate from India'. The Prime Minister said, "While four thousand patents were approved in the year 2013-14, last year their number increased to more than 28 thousand." He said that today there are more than 60,000 startup units in the country. Of these, 42 are unicorns (valued at over $1 billion). "Investment in research and development for future technologies is the priority of the government," Modi said.
