ABP EXCLUSIVE: From rescue to oil leak, know how Indian Coast Guard conducts operations at sea

ABP News team traveled from Porbandar in Gujarat to Jakhao Port of Kutch in a Coast Guard warship to take stock of the Coast Guard's security in the Arabian Sea near the Pakistani border.

The Coast Guard has a Coast Guard Aviation Center in Porbandar, Gujarat. Coast Guard's Dornier reconnaissance aircraft and indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) are stationed here. At present, there are more than 60 aircraft in the Indian Coast Guard's fleet, which monitor the country's more than 7500 km long coastline i.e. coastal borders day and night. According to DIG Aniket Singh, Chief Spokesperson of the Coast Guard, around 100 aircraft (including both fixed wing and rotary) are planned to be inducted into the Coast Guard fleet by the year 2025.

In the Aviation Center of Porbandar, especially about the ships of China and Pakistan, it was clearly written that how to identify them. Because along with the security of the shores, the responsibility of protecting the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of about 2.2 million square kilometers of the sea is also the responsibility of the Navy along with the Coast Guard.

Apart from this, the area of ​​​​Search and Rescue in the sea is much more. In such a situation, it is imperative for the Marines of the Coast Guard to know about enemy ships properly.

In this aviation center, popularly known as Pratap, information about two special missions was first given. The first was about a search and rescue operation and the second was about the collision of two ships, due to which there was a possibility of oil leaks in the sea. For this, briefings were given to Coast Guard officers and pilots. In this briefing, detailed information was given about what things to keep in mind.

An LAH helicopter was sent to the sea for search and rescue, while preparations were being made to send a Dornier aircraft and an ALH helicopter for oil spill prevention. Because the task of controlling pollution in the sea has been given to the Coast Guard. Dornier aircraft's woman pilot, Commandant Rajshree Rathore said that pollution control is very important because if oil spills in the sea, it harms marine life.

Dornier aircraft co-pilot, Deputy Commandant Pankaj said that although the Dornier aircraft is a reconnaissance aircraft, but the Indian Coast Guard also uses it for pollution control. For this, two tanks of 200-200 kg are installed in the Dornier aircraft.

The Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) filled in it is then sprayed from the sky through a rotating nozzle on the oil spread in the ocean. By spraying, the oil gets deposited in the bottom of the sea. This does not harm the marine life.

Similarly, the Coast Guard has installed a 900 kg 'bucket' in the LAH helicopter. Even in this big bucket, OSD i.e. Oil Spill Dispersant is filled and sprinkled on the oil from the sky.

After this, Dornier aircraft and LAH helicopters leave for the sea. Along with this, the team of ABP News also leaves for the Arabian Sea in Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Vessel, ICGS Vigilant. On board we were told that the ALH helicopter was sent to drill a search and rescue mission.

For this, a naval soldier of the Coast Guard had to practice to save it from the sea. While hovering in the sea, the crew of LAH dragged the sailor from the sea to the helicopter with the help of winching. 

According to the figures, about 6750 aircraft and helicopters of the Coast Guard have flown so far. According to the statistics, since its inception, Coast Guard has saved the lives of more than 10 thousand fishermen, sailors etc. in the sea. 

If a ship suddenly needs any goods in the sea, then ALH helicopter is also used for that. Its also a drill was shown in the sea. Let us tell you that flying over the sea was described by the famous Astronaut Neil Armstrong as one of the most difficult tasks in the world. He himself was a Naval Aviation Pilot and knew well the challenges of flying over the sea.
