NCB records Sameer Wankhede’s statement for a second time in connection with ‘extortion’ charges

A team from the NCB's vigilance department recorded Sameer Wankhede's statement for a second time at the agency's office in New Delhi on Monday.

Ateam of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials has recorded the statement of Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede for a second time, sources told India Today.

Wankhede, who is facing charges of bribery and extortion, was with officials of the vigilance department for nearly four hours at the drug enforcement agency's office in New Delhi on Monday.

The NCB had initiated a probe led by Deputy Director General (DDG) Gyaneshwar Singh into allegations levelled against Sameer Wankhede by NCB's independent witness Prabhakar Sail, among others.

A team led by the DDG had recorded Sameer Wankhede's initial statement at the NCB's office in the national capital on October 28.

However, sources in the NCB tell India Today that witness Prabhakar Sail is yet to record his own statement with the drug enforcement agency. A team of the NCB's vigilance department, which was in Mumbai last week, could not record Sail's statement owing to his unavailability. Sail has not been issued any summons as of yet.

Sail, one of NCB's independent witnesses in the Aryan Khan case, had claimed that he overheard his former employer KP Gosavi (another independent witness) and one Sam D'Souza discussing a 'pay-off' scheme of Rs 25 crore to let actor Shah Rukh Khan's son go. They were talking about Rs 8 crore going to Sameer Wankhede as part of the scheme, Prabhakar Sail alleges.

Before recording his statement on Monday, Wankhede met Vijay Sampla, chairman of the National SC/ST Commission. During his meeting with Sampla, the IRS officer submitted relevant documents to mount his defence in response levelled against him by Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik.

An NCP leader, Malik, has accused Sameer Wankhede of furnishing a 'false' caste certificate to secure a job in the Indian Revenue Services (IRS). The NCB zonal director, along with his wife Kranti Redkar and father Dnyandev Wankhede, has rubbished the allegations so far.
