2 army personnel killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district
Two army personnel were killed in an encounter with terrorists in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Friday.
"In an ongoing counter-terrorism operation in the general area of Nar Khas forest in Mendhar sub-division, there was an exchange of fire between army troops and terrorists during the evening hours of Thursday," a defence public relations officer (PRO) was quoted as saying in a PTI report.
Two army personnel were critically injured in the exchange of fire and they succumbed to their injuries on Friday. Meanwhile, one junior commissioned officer (JCO) went missing. Officials said that efforts are being made to trace the missing JCO but the area is prone to danger.
The two deceased army personnel have been identified as riflemen Vikram Singh Negi (26) and Yogambar Singh (27).
Rifleman Negi was a resident of Viman village in Uttarakhand's Tehri Garhwal district while rifleman Singh hailed from Chamoli district's Sankari village in Uttarakhand.
'EXEMPLARY COURAGE, SUPREME SACRIFICE'
“They displayed exemplary courage, devotion and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The nation will always remain indebted to these brave hearts for their supreme sacrifice,” the PRO said.
The Additional Directorate General of Public Information of the Indian Army saluted the two riflemen on behalf of Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane and “all ranks” via Twitter.
The tweet read, “General MM Naravane and all ranks salute the bravehearts rifleman Yogambar Singh and rifleman Vikram Singh Negi who made the supreme sacrifice during an operation in Poonch and offer deepest condolences to the families.”
On October 12, five army personnel including a JCO were killed in an encounter in Dera Ki Gali in the Surankote area of Poonch district. According to the Jammu and Kashmir police, the terrorists involved in the October 12 encounter had been in the area for two to three months.
