Drug mafia in Bhopal: Police retaliated on landlords

BENGALURULandlords are giving rooms on rent without verifying the information of foreign nationals in order to charge higher rent. Now the police has become strict about this. The Bengaluru Police Department has decided to make accused in narcotics and drug cases against such landlords.

Recently, in view of the involvement of foreign nationals in a drug racket in the state capital Bengaluru, the police has started a three-pronged investigation to tackle the drug mafia.

The investigation will henceforth investigate the side of the smugglers, both foreigners and homeowners involved in the drug racket.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr S D Sharanappa told IANS, "Those who give their houses on rent to foreign nationals have to give details to the local police station. Firstly, they should check the travel documents before paying the fare. Whether their identity card, documents are acceptable or not. If it's real, they can move on. Otherwise, it is their duty to inform the local police. The role of landlords who want to charge higher rent is being taken seriously.

Recently a house owner in Govindpura was served a notice in a drug case involving a Nigerian national and a South African woman, from where 56 grams of cocaine was recovered. Both were found to be living illegally in the country and involved in drug trafficking. On enquiry, the owner had no information about these persons and had let out his property at a higher amount.

DCP Sharanappa said, the house has been confiscated and we will take further legal action against this owner. Till now, notices were issued only to the landlords. We have decided to make them accused persons and confiscate their property, if the details of foreign nationals are not verified before renting them out.

Under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS), 70 foreign nationals were arrested in 2020, 44 in 2018 and 38 in 2019. There was a 200 per cent increase in the number of persons arrested in 2020 under the NDPS Act.
