implementation of CAA, protests have started in Jamia Millia Islamia
University. Let us tell you that today (11 March) the Modi government has
notified the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
What is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019?
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) is an act that was
passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019. The 2019 CAA amended the
Citizenship Act of 1955, allowing Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and
others to obtain Indian citizenship.
Christian religious minorities who fled neighboring Muslim
majority countries Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan before December 2014
due to “religious persecution or fear of religious persecution”. However
the Act does not include Muslims.
Under the CAA 2019 amendment, migrants who entered India till
December 31, 2014 and faced “religious persecution or fear of religious
persecution” in their country of origin were made eligible for citizenship by
the new law. Such migrants will be provided fast track Indian citizenship
in six years. The amendment reduced the residence requirement for
naturalization of these immigrants from eleven years to five years.
There was a demonstration regarding CAA
An online system for applying, processing and granting citizenship
under the CAA is being explored by the Home Ministry. The CAA was enacted
in December 2019 and came into force on January 10, 2020.
However, the CAA rules have not been notified yet, which is why
the Act has not been implemented.
The implementation of the law had sparked massive protests by the Muslim
community and opposition parties, calling it discriminatory and demanding its
withdrawal.
