Draupadi Murmu won the presidential election on Thursday, 21 July and was elected as the 15th President of India.

After a clear lead against opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, NDA's presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu won the presidential election on Thursday, 21 July and was elected as the 15th President of India.

With a comfortable margin against Sinha, Murmu secured 812 votes and emerged victorious in the race for Rashtrapati Bhavan. Notably, while the term of current President Ram Nath Kovind will end on July 24, Draupadi Murmu will take oath a day later on July 25.

The office of the President comes with a number of duties and responsibilities apart from certain privileges. Some of the major duties for the President of India are:

• The President holds the power as well as the responsibility to appoint the Prime Minister of India.
• The President has the power to appoint the Chief Justice of India.
• The President holds the power of appointment for all the states and thus can dismiss the Governor if necessary.
• Apart from the above posts, the President also has the power to appoint many other posts including ambassadors abroad.
• In addition, the President of India being the Commander-in-Chief of all the Indian Armed Forces can declare war at any time or call it off by the Prime Minister on the advice of the Council of Ministers.
• India's treaties with foreign countries are also signed in the name of the President.
• The financial budget of the government needs the prior consent of the President before it can be presented in the Parliament.
• If necessary, the President can declare a national/state/financial emergency at any time.
• At the same time, talking about the salary of the President, he gets a salary of Rs 5 lakh per month. Earlier the salary of the President was Rs 1.5 lakh, but later the Government of India increased it to Rs 5 lakh per month in the Union Budget of 2018.
