Making Of A Terrorist: Mohali Blast Accused Wandered Into Crime Owing To A ‘False’ Case

Out on parole, spent one hour with wife and then vanished, next his name came up in Mohali blasts.

Chandigarh: Eight years ago, Charat Singh was living a perfectly normal life, but today he is on the run after being named in the RPG blast which took place outside Punjab Police Intelligence headquarters in Mohali on May 9. A resident of Mehndipur village, 3 km from the Pakistan border in Khemkaran, Charat owned 12 acres of ancestral farm land. But then one day, he suffered a bullet injury in a dispute between two groups at Khemkaran, and instead of registering an FIR against those who had fired at him, he was booked in an attempt to murder case allegedly at the behest of an Akali leader, sources said. That event changed Charat and his life.

He subsequently left the village. But within a few days, he murdered the Akali leader named Shashi. It was Shashi, who Charat had then claimed, had falsely implicated him in the murder case and that the Akali leader deserved it every bit. The court had convicted Charat and his younger brother Jagroop Singh in the case. Both of them were given 10 years of imprisonment.

The two had already undergone eight years in jail in that case. And both were out on parole days before the Mohali blast. While Jagroop did not jump his bail, Charat jumped his 56-day parole and was named in the Mohali blast, after which he made a vanishing act.

Scuffle Between The Brothers

After the two of them came out on parole, the brothers had a scuffle at their home in the presence of Charat’s wife, his son, and adopted daughter. While Jagroop stayed back, within an hour of reaching home, Charat collected his luggage and left the place.

As the two of them are believed to be involved in the Mohali blast, while Jagroop was brought on a production warrant from Tarn Taran and questioned, Charat is at large.

Drug Route From Sehajrai in Pakistan to Mehndipur In India

Charat and Jagroop are symbolic of the problem that has spread into the villages on the India-Pakistan border. However, there is a reason why this village is always on the radar of security agencies.

The village of Mehndipur in Khemkaran and Sehajrai across the border is just 3 km apart. People in both these villages have big houses and have suddenly turned rich. And both these villages have become a breeding ground for drug-related crime.

When the crop is ripe and tall on both sides of the border, it becomes easier to slip in drugs, especially at night. Drones have made it even easier. Whoever owns the land in village Sahejrai at the India-Pakistan border, is a potential smuggler as well. And the destination for them is to send consignments right across to Mehndipur village.
