Russia Facebook Ban: Facebook banned in Russia! Revenge for action taken on government backed accounts
Russia Facebook Ban: Facebook limited access to accounts linked to the Russian government after Russia's attack on Ukraine.
Russia on Friday announced a ' partial ban' on Facebook . This has been done by Moscow because the
social media company had limited access to several Russian
government-backed accounts after
the attack on Ukraine. Russian state communications agency
Roskomnadzor said on Friday it called on Facebook to lift restrictions imposed
on Thursday on state news agency RIA Novosti, state TV channel Zvezda and
pro-Kremlin news sites Lenta.Ru and Gazeta.Ru. The agency said Facebook
has not reinstated the media outlets.
According to Roskomnadzor, the restrictions on the
accounts included marking their content as untrustworthy and placing technical
restrictions on search results to reduce the audience on Facebook. Roskomnadzor
said its "partial ban" on Facebook is effective from Friday. Also
said that it is not clear what exactly this step means.
Russian media accounts have not been banned
In its official statement, Roskomnadzor announced its action as a measure to
protect the Russian media. It also said that Russia's Foreign Ministry and
the Prosecutor General's Office found Facebook to be involved in violation of
fundamental human rights and freedoms as well as the rights and freedoms of
Russian citizens. This version has been corrected to show that Facebook is
banned, but Russian media accounts have not been banned.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov said on Friday that Russia does not want to "occupy"
neighboring Ukraine and that Moscow is ready for talks with Ukraine after the
Ukrainian army laid down its arms at the call of President Vladimir Putin. . Lavrov
made these remarks after talks with Sergei Persada, Deputy Foreign Minister of
the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Vladislav Denego, Foreign Minister of
the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), according to Russia's state-run news
agency 'Tass'. A day after Russia's military campaign against Ukraine
began, Lavrov said no one was going to occupy Ukraine.
